Hot Fuzzy Fun

Bloomin' 'eck - It has been a long time... but I'm determined to get back into this blogging business.

Went to see Hot Fuzz at a special gala screening in Leeds last Monday. It cost £10 per ticket but we got a bunch of freebies, including a copy of Shaun of the Dead each, and the chance to see the film almost 2 weeks before anyone else.

I laughed a lot, and enjoyed it at the time but thinking about it afterwards I wasn't sure how good it was compared to Shaun of the Dead. I kept getting the feeling I was laughing because I was expecting it to be good, and it was simply validating my opinion. Does that make it any less good? I don't know.

Anyway, in places it was predictable, but in the kind of way that feels a bit warm and fuzzy because it plays to a certain movie or genre. In others it really surprised me, where I was expecting it to cut away but it doesn't and you see some pretty sickening effects that made me laugh almost in shock. I enjoyed it at the time, but as I keep thinking about it I can't help feeling like there was something missing, as though they were trying to do too much in one film and there was no unifying thread.

It's not a rave review, in fact, rereading it, it's a bloody crap one which is why I'm going to stop discussing it as I can't seem to include anything positive. This is sad because I want them to keep on making great movies and become a key part of current UK film making. Anyway I'm going to have to see it again, and so should you, so you can judge for yourselves and help me decide.
